Do You Believe That Games Lose Their Appeal Over Time?

Do you think that classic games like Pac-Man and Space Invaders are still as fun to play now as they were in their day? It seems like, whenever critics review remakes of classic games, they always give the games lower scores than they originally did. Why? Did the games lose their magic? Did they become outdated? In 20 years (assuming we last that long!), will games like BioShock no longer be as fun?

Of course, morons like The Angry Video Game Nerd aren't helping in the least. All they do is turn on an old game, make some dumb crack about the graphics, call the game "a s***-load of f***", and turn it off.

This is an interesting issue. Do you think that games lose their appeal over time?

I think the problem is remakes not the originals. but i would definatly say originals like pac man have lost some of there appeal , especialy since they can be so old. i think critics only give remakes low scores is because generally a remake is done to reboot the franchise and improve it but they usualy dont work exspecialy for older games. people just end up doing worse then better and the remake gets a bad reveiw.

In 20 years i think bioshock and games out now will be jsut like pac man is now if not then similar just because technology moves so fast. theyve already come up with a wireless motion detecting system that can do all kinds of wonderful things(im reffering to project natal) so imagine what theyll have in 20 years.? who knows maybe games will jsut be glasses you put on and your in the game. maybe by then theyll have hologram projectors. the possibilities are endless.

Ooooo something war related I am compelled to give my opinion. Games do not desensitize the very reality of actually getting shot at. I have been playing games since I was old enough to pick up a controller and nothing can prepare you for the experience of combat outside of large scale, multiple asset military training. And that training only prepares you for a small part of one side of the conflict, shooting live rounds directly at soldier during training is generally frowned upon in the U.S. military. But seeing an Apache fly over your head and launch a rocket volley into a training model APC is a terrifying sight in and of itself, and these guys are on your team. Real war is an experience unlike anything else on earth. The smells, sights, concussive forces of explosions so close they rattle your vision and disorient your senses, and the reality that hits you when you realize your three man patrol to the local police station through the streets of a city that contains millions of people who can not communicate with you in an effective way and may hate you was the dumbest fucking thing you have ever volunteered for to get out of burning shit buckets in a forward operating post that is 100 by 100 yards and is 300 yards from a city that no American soldier has ever stepped foot in until now. Nothing can ever prepare you adequately for the chaos you will witness, not the best military training and certainly not a video game. Yes, there have been moments in video games where I, completely anecdotal, have been reminded of some of those same feelings and had small “flash backs” while playing a video game, in Project Reality my team was moving through a middle eastern style city stacked on a wall to take a corner, when a man came running 20 meters in front us with an AK and his back turned, we unloaded on him and finally put him down. In that brief moment I felt something similar to combat but it quickly faded, it does not compare to that feeling that lasted a full year of my life. It is my thought that some people are just not born with the ability to distinguish reality and entertainment, video games do no more to desensitize this small group that any movie or even book. That is my rant, I have the tendency to be long winded when I have had too much caffeine and for that I am sorry.

Not sure, though I love Lady Gaga, you'll probably get more answers if you ask this in the Entertainment & Music category instead of Visual Arts category.

****Ha..ha…ha…. I guess I got broken of the video game addiction when I spent my entire summers “yard mowing” earnings on a video game at the local “Tasty Freeze”… IN ONE SITTING!! yeah…. almost $40 down the drain…all because of a video game by the name of “Tempest”. My mother blistered my hide good and long and I have been pretty anti-video game ever since. ;P]]>
